I'd be very surprised if the Spartans don't blown out in Fresno. There's something fundamentally wrong with this team this season and it shows up in the poor play in nearly every aspect of the game. Pitching, hitting, running and defense have all been mediocre or subpar.

86….. you are an insightful poster. I totally understand your outlook. For some reason, I continue to look at the skill set of our players and expect more from them. I don’t understand how these guys have allowed themselves to be in this predicament. Possibly arrogance and over confidence.

Despite an error and runners on the corners, SJSU escapes a threat by Fresno State and remains up 6-0 after three.

Fresno State's starter lasted just 0.1 inning against the Spartan bats. SJSU scored six times - all from 3-run homers by "Mr. San Jose" Hamchuk and "Fear the" Spear - in the first.

Fresno State had a 2-out grand slam in the fourth after two walks. But the score is still SJSU 6-4 heading into the ninth thanks to excellent relief pitching by Gutierrez and George - including an unusual 3-4 double play to end the eighth.

SJSU has struck out FOURTEEN TIMES this game in 30 at-bats - all against Fresno's bullpen.

Spartans STUN the 2,400+ strong crowd in Fresno with a 6-4 win, ending the game on a double play.

Keaton Chase (2-1) got the W. Jesse Gutierrez and Nolan George combined for five scoreless innings out the pen.

This is a much much different Spartan team than I've seen earlier in the season, finding a way to sustain a two-inning lead for 5.1 innings! Somehow, none of the three SJSU errors led to free runs for the red team.

    Other MW results tonight:

    • Air Force 12, UNM 3 in Colorado Springs
    • Nevada 4, UNLV 1 in Las Vegas
    • San Diego State lost a non-con game 4-3 at no. 16 UC Irvine

    MW standings:

    • Fresno 14-5
    • Air Force 10-6
    • Nevada 10-8
    • New Mexico 8-8
    • SJSU 9-10
    • UNLV 7-12
    • SDSU 5-13

That was a nice win last night at the Dog's park... put them just outside top 4. As bad as they've played this season they still have a good shot at the conf tourny.

Fresno State's closer Arreola is really struggling to find the zone. 9-7 SJSU in the T9th, 1 out.

FINAL: Spartans 12, Fresno State 7. Spartans improve to 15-23 (10-10 MW) against a Fresno State team now at 25-13 (14-6 MW). SJSU has won three straight; Fresno State has a four-game losing streak.

SJSU hit .324 for the game with 12 hits while holding Fresno State to six hits and .194.

Corey Sanchez (1-1) got the W with 0 hits, 0 runs, 1 walk, and 2 strikeouts in 2.1 innings. Cade Van Allen closed out the game retiring all five batters faced - with four groundouts and one popout. Noah Beal (3-4) got the loss.

SJSU is now 3-2 this season vs. the red team.

    Updated MW standings:

    1. Fresno State 14-6
    2. Air Force 9-6
    3. Nevada 10-8
    4. New Mexico 8-8
    5. SJSU 10-10
    6. UNLV 7-12
    7. SDSU 5-13

SJSU is now in a fourth place tie with UNM. Due to snow in Colorado Springs, today's UNM at Air Force game was delayed to a Sunday DH.

Nevada has a game at UNLV in just a few minutes at 6:05. And a reeling SDSU has a home non-con game vs. no. 15 UC Irvine also at 6:05.

Thanks for the great report Andrew. It would be nice to see the Spartans sweep tomorrow

San Diego State falls to 11-27 after blowing a 6-3 lead in the eighth and losing 9-8 vs. no. 16 UC Irvine.

UNLV split the series with an 11-7 win vs. Nevada.

Updated MW standings have SJSU now half a game behind Nevada:

    1. Fresno 14-6
    2. AFA 9-6
    3. Nevada 10-9
    4. SJSU 10-10
    5. UNM 8-8
    6. UNLV 8-12
    7. SDSU 5-13

If SJSU can get the W at Fresno tomorrow and sweep UNLV in San Jose next weekend, they could potentially catch up to Fresno State because Fresno's next weekend series will be a non-con at (soon to be MW associate member) Washington State.

Yes…. anything is possible in this conference. In reality, no team is dominant and only San Diego State is horrible.

Too bad SDSU isn't on the football schedule this year.

And the series finale is on.

What a disastrous start for the red team. Orduño led off with a solo homer, then "Mr. San Jose" Hamchuk hit a solo shot out the park with two out. Fresno State missed the chance for a third out with a throwing error dropped by their 1B. SJSU is up 2-0 heading into the B1st.

Update: Ethan Ross is getting the start on the mound today after SJSU initially didn't name a Sunday starter.

SJSU remains up 2-0 after a bizarre first inning. Hardy tripped before he could throw a ground ball to first. But Forbes and Dorraugh connected for a rare 9-3 double play on the next at-bat due to the runner wandering too far off base, and Cadena ended the inning catching a foul ball near the LF fence. The announcer called out Fresno State for committing another baserunning mistake.

Spartans concede a two-out RBI single and lead 2-1 in the T5th. They missed an opportunity to blow the game open with the bases loaded and one out in the T4th, following a walk and error by Fresno State, due to a lineout double play.

It's 4-1 Spartans in the T8th. All four Spartan runs came off homers - most recently a Hunter Dorraugh two-run shot in the T5th.

Ross has gone seven innings allowing just one run. Fresno's starter lasted just five innings with 86 pitches, three hits, and four runs. Neither of Fresno's two relievers have allowed a hit.
