Students at LLS quickly become accustomed to two core locations on campus: one of solidarity and the other, of community. First is the Rains Law Library, where students find the reference material required to create compelling arguments. Next is Founders Hall, home to the Loyola Social Justice Law Clinic (LSJLC).

For decades, students have steadily made their way between these two locations on campus, combining the knowledge gathered from books with the unforgettable understanding gained from representing clients in need – whether securing legal status for an undocumented minor facing abuse, proving the innocence of a wrongly incarcerated individual, or reducing the sentence of a young person facing a lifetime in prison. For the lawyer and philanthropist Joan Lavine, this approach to education became the inspiration for a tremendous legacy: a $10 million bequest to support the library and social justice initiatives at LLS.

“This gift will help transform many aspects of our work,” said Waterstone. “It will fuel the continued success of our clinics, where our students are working on life-changing cases for the most vulnerable members of our community. It will strengthen our law library and scholarly mission, allowing us to grow the impact of our services and work. As these investments allow us to continue living out our ambition, they will inspire others to do the same.”

The gift to the library honors the cherished friendship between Lavine and former LLS head librarian, Dan Martin, who enjoyed many long conversations when they were neighbors in Malibu. Together, the lawyer and the librarian discovered a meeting of minds, and they found common ground in the mission of Loyola Law School.

Learn more at the link in our bio about how this gift will enable generations of future LLS students to advocate for those in need.

Johanna Lundy ’75 applied to LMU Loyola Law School (LLS) while mourning the loss of her husband, a fighter pilot who had been reported missing in action during the Vietnam War. His death was not confirmed until decades later and Lundy needed to find something to consume her grief and allow her to apply her inquiring mind. What’s more, she had six young children to support. Her years at LLS ultimately won her the financial freedom she needed, and established an outlet of lasting personal fulfillment.

Lundy, who passed away in 2020, was one of the many working single parents who have been empowered by pursuing the JD Evening Program at LLS. Her spirit of determination will now be honored by the Johanna Lundy Memorial Scholarship, funded by an endowment of $250,000 generously gifted by the Lundy family. Intended to support students in the JD Evening Program, with a preference for single parents like Lundy herself, the scholarship speaks to the university’s defining culture of advocating for those in need, a testament to the commitment to social justice that is central to the LLS mission.

Today, Feb. 9: Join second-year student and Entertainment Law Fellow Mehrin Saleem as she takes over @loyolalawschool on Instagram to show us a day in her life at LLS.

Saleem hails from the East Coast but moved to Southern California to pursue her dual Bachelor`s degree in Communication and International Business from the University of California, San Diego.

At LLS, she is the vice president of the South Asian Law Students Association (SALSA), ABA chair for the Day Students Bar Association (DSBA), film chair of the Entertainment and Sports Law Society (ESLS), and activity chair for Women in Entertainment Law Society (WELS). Saleem is also a staffer on the Loyola of Los Angeles Entertainment Law Review (ELR).

During her 1L summer, Saleem worked for FremantleMedia’s Scripted Television Business & Legal Affairs team. There, she drafted long-form agreements for writers, producers, and directors of several productions.

Saleem is also LLS’ diversity, equity, and inclusion assistant, where she assists with programming for events like Diversity Week.

The culmination of Saleem’s academic and professional experiences ignited her passion for exploring the intersection of media, entertainment, business, and the law. This became the driving force behind her decision to attend law school, and specifically to pursue entertainment law. As the first in her family to attend law school, let alone try her hand at the entertainment industry, she is determined to pave the path for underrepresented communities and champion the voices of diverse creatives, both on and off-screen.
