After months of drama, thrills, and disappointment, the 2023–24 regular season has come to a close. With the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs just a few days away, we take one final look at the ranking of all 32 teams and where they sit moving into the next few weeks and months.
TWC Power Rankings explained
If you’re new to our power rankings, this is how it all works.
Here at TWC, we use a statistical model to effectively rank teams on a week-to-week basis. The model takes into effect winning percentages, CF%, SCF%, HDCF% as well as SV%. Each statistical category is weighed and scored differently, giving each team a unique TWC Score that determines their ranking after each week. The formula puts the highest emphasis on winning percentages over other statistics. All numbers are taken in all situations, to incorporate special teams into the fray.
We got some excellent feedback over the course of last season from our readers as to how we could improve this model moving forward. This year we have slightly altered the weightings of the statistical categories, but also re-worked the recency component to make sure that each week the teams that are riding hot streaks are more appropriately demonstrated in the rankings.
Don’t like where your team is ranked? Unfortunately, they will have to turn it around on the ice, as we take zero personal opinions into effect.

The final week of our TWC NHL Power Rankings extends back over the last week and a bit to account for the rest of the NHL season. As a result, these are the final rankings from the 2023–24 season.
The Dallas Stars finished their season as the number-one team for back-to-back weeks after going 4–1–0. The team finished atop the Western Conference standings and will have home-ice advantage for the first few rounds of the playoffs. The Carolina Hurricanes also retained their position as the second-place team to finish the season off thanks to some strong underlying numbers. Although they didn’t win their division, they have positioned themselves strongly for long playoff run.
The Florida Panthers used a 4–0–0 record in the final week to not only jump up into the third position, but also to win the Atlantic Division (which is far more important). This sets up a dramatic first-round matchup with their state rivals, the Tampa Bay Lightning, which surely will be one of the best series to tune into.
The New York Rangers went 2–2–0 to end the season but still came out as the Presidents’ Trophy winners when it was all said and done. They easily have the most favourable matchup against the Washington Capitals in the first round, but can’t look too far ahead of the task at hand.
The Winnipeg Jets finished the season on an eight-game win streak, earning them home-ice advantage for the first round and a massive jump of eight spots on our rankings. Their series against the Colorado Avalanche is going to be must-watch television.
Looking at the rest of our list, the Washington Capitals stand out significantly. They finished the season at 18th on our list, which is below non-playoff teams like the Pittsburgh Penguins and Minnesota Wild. The team’s unprecedented playoff appearance will be interesting to watch to see if they can either continue their magic or expose them as pretenders and not contenders.
