People have pushed their diets aside for it, planned marriage proposals over it, and traveled long distances just to get a sip of Serendipity 3’s famous Frozen Hot Chocolate. That’s one popular drink. And for good reason – it’s icy, creamy, chocolatey pure bliss. Luckily, you do not have to fly all the way to New York City to get one, or at least something similar. We’re sharing our version today and we bet you already have everything in your pantry to make one right now.

Christmas in July Drink

Frozen and hot in the same recipe title definitely seems like a contradiction, but this drink really is just like classic hot chocolate in cold, blended form.

If it’s blazing hot outside and you’ve got leftover hot cocoa packets from winter, listen up, my friends. This is about to be your new favorite summer treat. It sort of reminds us of a Wendy’s Frosty, but icier. So, basically a chocolate icy. If you love hot cocoa in the winter, you will love frozen hot chocolate in the summer.

When my kids were very little I started making this drink as a Christmas in July tradition and they’d beg for it every day. Now that they’re older, I just beg them to make it for me!

Frozen Hot Chocolate Recipe

Only 4 ingredients needed, plus optional whipped cream and chocolate shavings to top it off.
(Scroll below to the printable recipe card for details and measurements.)

  • Chocolate milk: The original drink is made with regular milk, which you can use, but we looooove chocolate milk for even more chocolate flavor. (Need it dairy free? Use chocolate almond milk, instead. We’re partial to Silk and Blue Diamond.)
  • Dry hot chocolate mix: Any brand of hot chocolate mix works, keeping in mind that the flavor, sweetness, and grittiness will vary depending on which one you use. But this is a great way to use up the mismatched hot chocolate packets that are hanging out in your kitchen cupboard.
  • Chocolate sauce: What can I say, we love chocolate. So we add in a bit of our homemade chocolate sauce. Or you can use store-bought chocolate syrup. Do it!
  • Ice: Even with my high-powered Vitamix blender, I still prefer crushed ice over cubed because it just pulverizes the ice easier, but cubed ice works fine, too. If you have a lower-end blender, though, you’ll definitely want to use crushed ice to achieve the smooth consistency.
  • Whipped cream and chocolate shavings (optional): These ingredients are purely optional, but we love topping our drinks with homemade whipped cream and some chocolate shavings or sprinkles, because more yumminess!

How to Make Frozen Hot Chocolate

This isn’t rocket science. Lol. It’s just a dump and blend cold drink. But there are a few things worth noting for optimal results.
(To make this frozen hot chocolate recipe, follow the steps below included in the printable recipe card.)

  • Use a high-powered blender: Lower-end blenders don’t blend the ice very well. If that’s all you have, use crushed ice and not cubed.
  • Don’t over blend: The authentic Frozen Hot Chocolate drink from Serendipity 3 has bits of ice, as opposed to a completely blended and smooth frosty. It’s delicious no matter what, but if you want those tiny chunks of ice, don’t over-blend.
  • Hot chocolate mix in bulk: If you don’t have individual chocolate packets, but do have a container of hot chocolate mix, a 1 ounce packet is equal to about 2 tablespoons powder.
